What’s Happening: Dreams On the Horizon

We are in the process of turning a general coworking space into a digital nomad hub for those who travel and work their way around the world. A place of creativity, affordability, & innovation for those who seek inspiration through travel. “Coworking” is very popular in San Francisco, and refers to a communal work space where individuals and small teams can create and innovate among other entrepreneurs.

Who We Welcome

While our current space is geared towards a broad audience- startups in SF, freelancers, small businesses, etc- we are in the process of creating a space specifically for ‘digital nomads’. We want to build a community of entrepreneurs who work their way around the world. Those intrepid travelers building up their own businesses, working on travel related apps, or freelancing their way through countries and cultures.

We will also welcome those whose journeys have pit stopped in San Francisco, whether for one month or one year. Those who have put the temporary brakes on wandering will get more out of our space than a general coworking. By surrounding themselves with other digital nomads, they will still be able to maintain that sense of adventure and curiosity travel brings.

Coworking is cool. Why the change?

Why the change of emphasis to travelers? Well, that’s who we are at our core. Our small team is made up of multiple nationalities, backgrounds, and experiences that brought us to SF from around the world. We are designers and writers, techies and artists, as varied as the neighborhoods of San Francisco. But the one thing we all have in common is our continual passion to see the world. It’s not just about work, it’s about experiences and people. We gather passport stamps like entrepreneurs collect startup tshirts.

Entrepreneurs Without Borders

Dozens of nationalities used our coworking space in the past year, working on everything from international freelance projects to small startup companies. The ability to work from anywhere is one of the most underutilized benefits of the digital age, and we want to help enable this. If you can work from a coffee shop across the road, why can’t you work from a coffee shop across the globe? However we go one better:  We provide a space with the freedom to pursue your individual projects with the amenities of a professional workspace.

Why can’t I just go to a cafe?

Coffee shops can be loud, crowded, and distracting. Our space has a friendly communal vibe, but with the space to work and ability to focus. Struggling from jet lag? We provide free tea and coffee. Tired of looking at your tiny travel laptop screen? We have large external monitors to hook up to. Traveling solo but need to bounce an idea off someone? You’ve got a handful of idea-generating dreamers all around you. Whatever you’re looking for, we aim to provide.

“And SF is cheap!” said no one, ever. Until Now.

We know that San Francisco can seem daunting financially, and we’re here to show the world that it doesn’t have to be! Our rates are some of the lowest in town. Not only that, we are connected with the #1 rated backpacker hostel in San Francisco. The ability to connect with other backpackers and nomadic entrepreneurs is just around the corner, 2 blocks away. Affordable traveler accommodation + a travel based coworking space means digital nomad dreams are about to come true.

How We’ll Do It

Our plan for changing this space is a mixture of marketing, partnerships and decor. It will take a lot of work, but not a large amount of money. Just as travelers and bootstrappers make their budget stretch, we are doing the same. On the physical level, we know a little paint, some great lighting, and general artistry can go a long way to making it a space people want to gather. We have a great ‘shell’, now we need the inspiration shown throughout the walls.

What We’re Seeking

We are looking for help with decor and amenity costs. Our walls need paint, art, and creativity. Our lighting can be more inviting, and our physical set up more conducive to interaction. We also like to provide as many amenities to our guests as possible, so they can travel with less. We will also use money towards connectors, monitors, and other supplies.

  • Paint: $1000
  • Decor: $1000
  • Lighting: $1000
  • Electronics: $2000

Stretch goals: ‘SmartBoard’ for classroom; Marketing; Advertising

About

I’m Courtney and I'm a traveler, manager, surfer and general lover of lifer.

The travel bug bit me early. Over the last 10 years I've lived in the US, South Africa, Thailand, the Netherlands, and Swaziland. My passion has always been backpacking and the travel industry. I managed my first hostel in Swaziland at 25, and never looked back. I moved to San Francisco in 2012 to take over the #1 rated hostel in SF, Pacific Tradewinds. I've been there managing ever since, minus a 6 month break throughout Australia and New Zealand to write for HostelManagement.com.

I became involved with our coworking last year. It's the home offices for HostelManagement.com, only a couple blocks from the hostel, and a great place for me to focus on managing the business. I also have many guests that are working their way around the world. As the coworking turned towards travel, I wanted to be involved in recreating it. I'm very excited to see its future!"

My ultimate goal is to open my own hostel for nomads of all sorts. Stay tuned!
