Tulum, Mexico

Hi Travel Starter!

After traveling and hosting backpackers from all over the world, I've realized tourism is the best way to bring about international development if it is done sustainably, that is protecting the natural resources and developing the local economy. This is how the Hive was born. Lots of planning later, it's time to build the Hive with your help.

Tulúm

Tulúm is an awesome small town where you immediately feel like a local. It's such an inviting and bike-friendly town where you can't help but wish you could stay longer.

It is famous for its Cenote pools and dive caves, Mayan Ruins and villages, Turquoise water and amazing wildlife.

The Hive will be built in a strategic location in a forested area within a 2 mile (3.2km) radius of the beach, the Mayan Ruins, many Cenote pools and the magical city of Tulum, all of them within biking distance.

Most importantly, however, we chose Tulúm because it is at a critical period where tourism is starting to impact the natural resources. Bigger neighboring cities like Cancún and Playa del Carmen have already suffered the negative impacts of pollution from mass tourism. Tulúm is at the brink of such growth but there is still time to reverse the trend. We believe sustainable and ecological tourism as promoted at the Hive will keep Tulúm from becoming degraded like Cancún and Playa del Carmen.

Currently, there are many efforts at ecological tourism, however most options are expensive. The Hive will achieve affordability by the efficiency of its hexagon layout and the simplicity of its services.

How Exactly Will the Hive Benefit Tulúm?

At the Hive we believe that sustainable tourism along with enjoying the natural beauty of Tulúm also involves developing the local economy and population. We believe tourism's benefits go far beyond the economic impact of buying souvenirs. Sustainable tourism includes the exchange of information, technologies and culture between the host and visiting populations. This exchange is done through commerce, voluntourism, workshops and cultural exchange opportunities, all of which will be promoted at the Hive.

First, the Hive will benefit the actual bees’ population by having its own Melipona Beehive which is a local stingless bee responsible for pollination in the Yucatan Peninsula Jungle. This beehive will serve to host workshops to teach locals and guests organic beekeeping practices so they can supplement their income and learn pesticide-free agriculture practices such as permaculture.

Second, the Hive will benefit Tulum by not polluting. Currently, most human waste goes directly into the groundwater contaminating the cenote pools, reefs and killing marine life thus undermining the future of the Mayan Riviera. Unlike other hostels, the Hive will practice humanure composting which is a simple technology that keeps human waste from entering the groundwater supply. Furthermore, compost can be used to further the local farming capacity. These technologies mastered by ancient civilizations such as the Aztecs in the Chinampas in Central Mexico will be shared with guests and locals. In essence, we will rescue and disseminate Mesoamerican practices to solve a current and global issue which is the need for ecological sanitation.

Third, we will use locally-made biodegradable care products such as shampoo and soaps made with honey, coconut milk and other natural ingredients thus supporting local industry while protecting the groundwater from pollutants. We will also buy locally made products such as artisan bread and home-made tortillas.

Fourth, the Hive is inspired by a honeycomb and as can be seen in the prototype and model, its beds are hexagonal cells. This prototype was tested and proved that it is comfortable to sleep in a human-sized hive cell. We have a lot to learn from the bees and they have showed us that hexagons provide the most efficient use of space and materials. This efficiency will be translated into savings in construction, maintenance and operation allowing us to be an affordable and ecological hostel.

Fifth, the Hive will use widely available and pioneering green building technologies such as solar panels and hempcrete, respectively. We will share these technologies through workshops with guests and locals in order to promote sustainable development in México and abroad.

Lastly, the Hive will benefit Tulúm by promoting voluntourism. The local and indigenous Mayan populations have educational, medical and professional needs. The Hive will sponsor visiting doctors and teachers who will care for and train the local community thus truly benefitting the host population.

Funds Allocation

We are purchasing the land as we speak and we need your help to buy these green technologies, source renewable materials and build the common areas. This is how we are going to utilize the funds you donate to us:

9 Hexagon Cells......9,000

Common Area.........6,000

Solar Panels...........5,000

Total.....................20,000

However, we have one investor that has promised $5,000.00 therefore, we only need to raise $15,000.00! I’m confident we will meet and exceed this goal and each extra dollar will go towards building additional hexagon cells, further increasing our efficiency. Construction will start in September and we expect to receive our first guests in November1st, 2016.

Our Team Experience

We have been working in construction projects both big and small for almost 10 years. We are also partnering with locals who have already built green buildings utilizing their local expertise and advice. We have international experience working and starting companies abroad. Together, our membes have experience in the hospitality, construction and social media industries. However, our greatest asset is our passion about traveling as a means to promote natural preservation and local development.

The Hive Needs You!

Please help us build the Hive so we can save the bees and protect Tulúm with ecological tourism and sustainable local economic development.
