Torralba, SS, Italy

  • Where we are:

If Sicily is the toe of Italy’s boot, Sardinia, the second biggest Italy’s island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, is its “sandal”, in fact its ancient name was “Sandalia” due to its sandal shape.

The island has an area of more than 9 sq ml and coasts for a length of more than 1.000 miles. The main city of Sardinia is Cagliari, in the south of the island with 430.000 inhabitants while the main city of the north area is Sassari, with 130.000 inhabitants.

Sardinia is one of the most geologically ancient bodies of land in Europe and above all is the cradle of the Nuragic civilisation, a prehisorical civilisation dated from the III millennium BC!

In the central area of the island you can visit stone age tombs, stepped pyramids, sacred wells, giant tombs and the most famous NURAGHE!

Sardinia is littered with 7.000 nuraghe, megalithic towers built between 1600 BC and 2000 BC: Mercury Travels wants to guide you inside the most fascinating nuraghe of Sardinia, like Nuraghe Santu Antine and Nuraghe Barumini. But we also want to lead you to the most important prehistorical Sardinian sites: Monte d’Accoddi, the stepped pyramid-temple dated around III millennium BC, the Giants of Monte Prama, giant statues dated to the 10th century BC, the holy well of Santa Cristina of the bronze age, and many many other mysterious and ancient monuments around the island!

When the idea started:

In 2005 together with my wife we moved to Milan for her postgraduate studies and we ended up living there for 7 years. When we decided to go back to Sardinia due to my wife’s job and our personal choice I had to start again from zero... and I knew that no job opportunities were waiting for me.

This is when I decided to do what I like most: driving! After almost two years of hard work and loooots of patience preparing documents, licences, bureaucracy (start up bureaucracy in Italy is exhausting...) I launched my small company for transfer and tours with minibus rent with driver called Mercury Travels.

The project:

Mediterranean sea, Costa Smeralda, luxury hotels, breathtaking beaches... yes, but Sardinia has an ancient heart, the heart of Nuragic civilization!

While the coastal area is sufficiently linked, visiting the inner area and the most important prehistorical sites is impossible through public transport since roads and railways network is very poor.

Mercury Travels wants to invite tourists to discover the other face of Sardinia, its most ancient and fascinating soul, full of history, culture and living traditions!

Mission:

Mercury Travels was born 3 years ago aiming to offer visitors coming to Sardinia mainly for coastal and maritime tourism the opportunity to discover the inner area of the island, full of culture, ancient history, traditions, by means of a specialized transport service. Despite the noble aim, balancing low budget, costs, taxes and incomes is not easy at all (especially with Italian taxes!), so during this start up period we had to focus the business on the route Sassari- Olbia, which connects north Sardinian most important airports, commercial and public facilities areas.

Budget is low and taxes are high, but our dream is still alive!

What we will use funds for:

What we would like do to now is buying a brand new 9 seater minibus so we can give new wings to Mercury Travels, just as the mythological messenger of gods deserves!

We would like to dedicate the new vehicle entirely to archaeological tours around Sardinia for visitors, giving them a friendly, comfortable and personalized travel service.
