The Partnership

Michelle Aftimos and Kelly O'Hara met in 2004 at the famed Banana Bungalow Hostel. Kelly was traveling on holiday and Michelle was managing the hostel at the time. On finishing college Kelly returned to work at the Banana Bungalow as her passion for hostel life, and San Diego living, had been ignited. With years of hostel experience under our belts we have both dreamed of owning our own business that provides affordable accommodations to travelers from around the world.

The Opportunity

A few months ago a space in the Historical Dunaway Building became available and our vision of running our own business quickly materialized. The location is the second floor of one of the oldest buildings in Pacific Beach and after much debate between opening a traditional hostel and a Bed and Breakfast we have decided the small 8 room space will be best suited for a Bed and Breakfast with the social aspects of a more traditional hostel.

The Holdup

Turns out 30 years of businesses coming and going at the Dunaway have gone undocumented with the city and we are now responsible for documenting all work since 1982. This has resulted in us hiring a lawyer (ouch), a new architect firm, (pricey) and more city permit fees (ridiculous and maddening). Although our final plans are submitted the pace at which the city moves is painfully slow, and as weeks are becoming months, waiting on the cities final approval to open, our remaining start up investment has been spent dealing with this holdup.

To Do's to OPEN!!

We have been told the city always comes back with plan revisions and most likely some adjustments to the work done over the 30 years. As soon as we get the go ahead from the city we need to pay for the permits which run in the thousands.  As you can see by the photos many of our rooms are incomplete and we need to putting the finishing touches on this B&B to make it really special.

We hope to have completed our permitting process for an August-September opening.

How we will use your funding

  • Making the changes/updates required by the city
  • Obtaining permits upon approval
  • Furnishings, artwork, and other essentials to open with a finished look

Rewards offered

  • Thank you Dunaway Bed & Breakfast postcard
  • Brewery tour or Gaslamp Pub Crawl with Lucky D's Hostel
  • Whale Watching tour
  • Dorm bed or private room stay at the Dunaway Bed & Breakfast

About

I have been involved in the running of hostels since moving to San Diego in 2003. First at the Banana Bungalow, where Kelly and I met, and after that at Lucky D's Hostel in downtown San Diego. In the 5 years prior to settling in San Diego, a good amount of that time was spent staying in hostels as I backpacked around the world. Before leaving New Zealand for my backpacking adventure I studied Hospitality Management at Auckland University of Technology.

With this experience, and my love for the hostel accommodation business, I immediately knew when the second floor of the Dunaway Building became available, that we had to open a boutique hostel, or our take on the traditional Bed & Breakfast. Due to our locations smaller size, and city regulations, we decided to open as a Bed & Breakfast, focusing on promoting the social, interactive, family atmosphere that one finds in a good hostel, and what makes this branch of the accommodation sector so very special.

I am a traveller at heart and have years of hostel living and managing under my belt. After finishing my schooling with a Bachelors in Accounting I soon gave up the suits for a different type of lifestyle. I am motivated and hard working and opening a hostel has been a dream of mine since the day I walked through the doors of the Banana Bungalow.
