My project is to develop a website (Wikipedia for treks and camping) where the local guides from small isolated villages in India and Nepal can list their treks directly.

Over the years while hiking in India and Nepal, I noticed that large and medium sized companies employ their own guides to take people around, whether it is a one day hike or a 15 day long expedition. In the process, the locals from isolated villages in Himalayas lose out on any form of business since they do not have access or the understanding of technology to be able to reach out to the mass audience.

Our idea is to create a marketplace for local guides instead of companies. Anyone interested in hiking, camping or trekking can get in touch directly with the locals to arrange their vacation. This will help in boosting the village economy and provide the much needed financial help to the locals who are anyways living in really isolated places and harsh conditions.

Traveling with locals will also give the traveler an opportunity to see the world through a local's eyes, understand the region better and also gain access to the knowledge which only locals can possess. All this at a much cheaper price compared to the larger companies.

The benefits of booking from these guides are numerous. Some of them are:

1. One can arrange treks at 60-70% of the price currently being charged by other trek companies in India and Nepal. There is almost always a middle man involved who takes a commission and passes on the job to some selected guides. We on the other hand do not charge any commission but directly list the local guides with their details and photographs so people can reach out to them directly.

2. Since these guides operate at a much smaller scale, the traveler will have many options for customization. For example, requirement of porters or mules, change in itinerary, requirement of transportation, specific demand for food etc. Since most of the established companies operate fixed batches of 20-25 people, customization is not an option.

3. Access to knowledge which only the locals will be aware of since they have spent their life staying and wandering around these isolated regions. They also know the local language which proves beneficial in communicating while on the trek.

4. Most importantly, providing employment to these guides will help in boosting the village economy.

With Pure Explore, we are targeting urban and sub-urban travelers within the age group of 18-35 in India and foreign tourists. Outdoor exploration is now rapidly catching up in India and Nepal with the younger generation who are less interested in going to the over-crowded popular tourist destinations, but more to the less explored ones. The tired and nerve shaken corporate employee now sees camping in the midst of nature as the ultimate stress buster. Since the trend is growing, many trek companies have come in the picture, but not a true marketplace where people can get in touch with local guides and companies and compare them according to various factors like price, facilities offered, availability of dates, customization options and reviews by other travelers.

We launched ‘Pure Explore’ on social media channels on 15th October 2015 to be able to build a community of travelers so that when the product finally launches, we already have a group of people to reach out to. In a span of 40 days, we have managed to get 2200 people organically to join our community on various social media channels. The number is only growing with every day and we expect it to reach about 10,000 when eventually the product is live. We have also been able to gather about 600 email sign-ups for the launch with absolutely nil marketing.

We require funding primarily to develop the technology, namely the website. Since trekking and camping is only now growing in popularity in India, the relevant information is scattered all over the internet. We still do not have a dedicated community of explorers in India where everyone could pitch in to create a database of relevant, reliable and updated information. Our website will be slightly extensive as every single trek and camping spot will have a Wiki feature where users can add and edit information to keep it updated and relevant. Users will be able to build their profiles and find trek partners. Once they create a profile, they will also be able to leave verified reviews for the guides listed which will help other travelers in deciding which guide to finally go with.

The cost of website, maintenance and hosting for a year comes to roughly $2,500.

Another small part of funding will go towards travelling which will help us in reaching out to these guides personally who do not have any digital presence whatsoever. The onetime cost of travel to these remote locations to get all these guides on board is roughly $1,000.

We have already invested some of our own money but in need of slightly more to be able to execute this project without a hiccup. We have projected that roughly $500 will be used to reach out to the mass audience using offline and online marketing including SEO, Google AdWords, Facebook Advertisements, etc.

Currently, it is just me who is working on this entire project which I am really passionate about. Although couple of friends are helping me in their own little ways, but I have and will be involved in every aspect of this project. The reason being, I would want to keep a complete check on the quality and the processes which is of paramount importance. Secondly, at this early stage, I would want to involve only individuals who are truly passionate about what we are building and share the same vision. It is better to work with one person who is passionate rather than with 10 people who are merely interested.

At this phase, I am not focussing on making money out of this project. I believe if I keep my focus on building something that helps a section of the society; money will follow on its own.
